Although celebrated for his work in three dimensions, Calder was also a prodigious painter. In the 1940s, as he became increasingly prolific in his sculptural output, he delved into gouache painting. Some of these works on paper explore concepts that the artist would later develop in mobiles, stabiles, and standing mobiles. The volumetric, intertwined forms in Bollards express dynamic energy in two dimensions and foreshadow aspects of large-scale stabiles such as Trois bollards (1970) and Bollard (1970).
