Throughout his career, Calder illustrated many of his mobiles, stabiles, and standing mobiles for exhibition catalogues published in the United States and abroad. These sketches express the dynamic nature of his output in two dimensions and offer valuable insight into a sculpture’s composition and orientation. The cover of this notebook features a drawing made in 1949 for Buchholz Gallery/Curt Valentin, New York. The endpaper illustrations come from an extraordinary double-sided drawing that Calder made from memory as a lead-up to his 1943 retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, tracing his evolution as an abstract artist.
